This is the unique original Gouache painting by Patrick Nicolle.

During the First World War men on horseback were an easy target for concealed machine-gunners. Here we see Lieutenant Manfred von Richtofen of the 1st Regiment of Uhlans who managed to lead his surviving lancers to safety. Within a few months, he left the Uhlans and became, like many other former cavalry officers, an airman, though few became as famous as Richtofen, "The Red Baron", Germany's highest scoring fighter ace.

This illustration appeared on p12 of Look and Learn issue no 690 (5 April 1975) as part of a series Warriors of the World that utilised Nicolle's wonderful art.
