This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Graham Coton.

An atmospheric scene by Graham Coton showing Alexander MacKenzie arriving back in port after one of his famous explorations of the Canadian West. He mapped vast areas of land in order to open them up to trade, managing to do so without harming Indians. He paved the way for fur traders, gold prospectors and latterly oil exploration.

He made two attempts to reach the Pacific by following rivers flowing North Westward. On his first attempt he arrived in the Arctic ocean and supposedly named the river Disappointment River. Today the river bears his name. His second attempt was halted by Heiltsuk Indians. MacKenzie was born in the Outer Hebrides and later retired to Scotland after two periods travelling in Canada.

This is the original artwork used for a biography of MacKenzie in Look and Learn #532, 25th March 1972.
