From a retelling of the story of "The Patriotic Mercenary" by George Thomas. After several earlier (mis)adventures Thomas offers his services to Begum Somru a landowner who had a vast private army.
George Thomas was an Irish mercenary and later a Rajah who was active in 18th-century India. From 1798 to 1801, he ruled a small kingdom in India, which he carved out of Hisar and Rohtak districts of Haryana. Thomas became well known for the mobility of his troops and his own fearlessness in the midst of battle.
