This is the original Watercolour painting by Wilf Hardy.

On the 26th April 1940 incendiary bullets started a fire in the wing of a Lancaster Bomber returning from a raid over Germany. Flight Engineer Norman Jackson crawled out onto the wing with a fire extinguisher.

The fierce slipstream caused his parachute to open which helped support him as he fought the blaze. Eventually he was blown off the wing and his partially burnt parachute did well enough for him only to suffer a broken ankle on landing.

He was captured and imprisoned until the end of the Second World War. He became the only air engineer to win the Victoria Cross for his courage and bravery.

Dramatic artwork by Wilf Hardy first published in Look and Learn 420 31 January 1970.
