From a feature on the history of the military uses of aviation from the first balloon recognisance to the first bombs. Flying Firsts: Bombs Away! (Main pic) Turkish soldiers used to take pot shots at Italian aircraft making reconnaissance flights overhead; in 1911, Lt. Giulip Gavotti became the first man to drop a bomb from a plane; (far left) the first military mission from the air was Brevet-Captain Charles Coutelle of the French Aeronautic Corps who used a balloon to observe Dutch movements in 1794.
