This is the Signed unique original Pen & Ink Wash by Cecil Doughty.

A striking depiction of the moment Bishop Odo of Bayeux (the half-brother of William the Conqueror) - who had been besieged in Rochester Castle - is forced out to face the jeers and taunts of his English subjects demanding the hangman's noose. He was subsequently exiled and died in Palermo on his way to a crusade in 1097.

This is a very detailed and emotive painting showing how Odo, at one time the second most powerful man in England was forced into shame, losing all respect. The board is signed in the top left corner but the date (1948) has been painted over in white paint made to blend with the clouds, undoubtedly before the picture was sent to print.
