This is the Signed unique original Pen & Ink Wash by Cecil Doughty.

A striking painting capturing the moment Captain Cook met his untimely end in Hawaii on 14 February 1779. After attempting to sail away, the Resolution's foremast broke, forcing the return to the Island where quarrels took place and Cook attempted to kidnap the King.

This ended badly with a huge number of natives congregating on the shore, clubbing Cook in the head and also stabbing him to death face down in the surf. Cook's body was then baked in order to remove the bones, which were returned to the ship's crew to be buried at sea.

Cecil Doughty painted mainly from history, and this is a fantastic example of a timeless scene. Doughty has signed the piece in the bottom right hand corner but the date (51) has been mysteriously painted over and is barely visible.
